Color Polaroid

Back in the day, I loved shooting with both color and black and white Polaroid. I’d try to keep any dust off of the color roid as it dried, then I’d scan it before trying to store them in plastic sleeves. I love the muted colors of T-59. Just found a box of it for $125 on Amazon. Geesh. Here’s one from the archives. . . The little red dot was just some polaroid strangeness. I remember putting polaroids in my armpit if it was cold out, to try and aid the development. Sometimes some odd discoloration would show up on the roid – probably the chemicals from my deodorant.

Paolo Roversi’s visual choices still inspire me – they jive with what I like to create. I’m not interested in the models and makeup anymore. Just give me a willing person, some fluid fabric, then I’ll aim my fan and camera and shoot.

RIP Eve Arnold

At 99, the talented and prolific photographer, Eve Arnold has passed. She was one of the first female photojournalists and one of the first female members of the Magnum Photography Agency. From Marilyn Monroe to Malcolm X, she captured visual stories of people all over the world, working well into her 70′s. ”What drove me and kept me going over the decades?” Arnold wrote in her memoir. “If I had to use a single word, it would be ‘curiosity.’ ” Another quote I love by her: “If a photographer cares about the people before the lens, and is compassionate, much is given. It is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument.”

I’m inspired by her curiosity and compassion.

High School Seniors Rock

Ah, to be a senior in high school again. There’s some things I don’t need to re-live, but at 17 – 18 years old I do remember NOT feeling that time is flying by like I do now. I remember NOT having to ignore the wrinkles under my eyes, (and other areas). I do remember feeling I had my entire life ahead of me. I remember feeling excited to embark on the journey called “adulthood”, which to me meant more freedom and control of my life. Well…. 27 years after my high school graduation (don’t do the math please) I don’t know about freedom and control. That’s an involved conversation of meaning, perspective, experience, etc…. On one hand it feels like very little time has passed since I was the 18 year old me. I still have many of the same passions and desires. On the other hand, when I think about how much has transpired since graduating from high school, I feel tired! Whew! A lot has happened and then again not enough, and then again, I daily look forward to many more years of adulthood but with a toe in my teen years – full of anticipation and wonder.

I digress… this post is for all of you current day, high school seniors. I’d love to photograph you. This is an important time in your life and portraits are a valuable way to capture this age you are now. Your parents, friends and family will appreciate these images of you, and you will too… There will come a time in your life when you’ll want to look at an image of yourself from when you were “young” to remind your older self, “Ah yes, THAT’s who I am”.

Stay Young

New Year’s resolutions? Nahh . . . As soon as I declare one, I know it will peak then fade. So I can make crazy resolutions such as: ” In order to be more productive each day, I will do my yoga routine while I shower.” Brilliant! I save time killing 2 birds with 1 stone. A bit dangerous, but multi-tasking during downward dog, in the private, solitude of my shower sounds super! Another form of Hot Yoga perhaps?

Now, if I commit to do that, them is fighting words. Commitment sounds more powerful to me. I’m choosing, right now, to commit to reminding myself, to stay young. (Notice I didn’t commit to staying young, but to reminding myself…sounds realistic, yes?) Life gets heavy, there’s no avoiding that. But I can remind myself to lighten up and play, along with the pondering – just like my lovely, little niece. She dances and jumps around even when there’s no music. Then she rests. I’m saying it here, right now in front of you blog readers: When I start feeling the heaviness of life, I’m going to get up and jump around until I feel so silly I smile, do a spin, swing my skirt, then hug my knees and rest a moment. Life just might feel a bit lighter after that.

Hello 2012. I’m ready for you.
