Join Me Maui! Portrait Class for Patrick Dougherty Sculpture Installation

September 1, 2011

I’m really excited about teaching this outdoor portrait class at the Hui No’Eau Visual Arts Center in Makawao that begins this Thursday, September 8th.   We’re conducting this class during world-renowned environmental sculptor, Patrick Dougherty‘s, artist residency visit for the month of September.

This is a great opportunity to spend some time learning about natural light, outdoor portraits as we look at the images of Imogen Cunningham, August Sander, Edward Steichen and many other masters through photo history. After getting inspired by these photographer’s works and talking about composition, light, and mood, we’ll take our cameras outside where Patrick Dougherty and volunteers from the community will be building the stick sculpture from saplings of invasive tree species of Maui.  His work is playful and imaginative with large creations resembling structures and beings from children’s books or other lands.

We’ll have four chances to capture some beautiful portraits of the workers with the evolving sculpture as the backdrop. By the last class we’ll have a nice documentation of the workers and the sculpture;  but most of all I hope it gets your creative juices flowing to continue and explore the way you see people through the lens of your camera!

So get on their site and sign up now before the cut-off  this weekend!  Tell your friends! Let’s create some amazing portraits!  Sign up, sign up!

(Get what I’m trying to say?)
