Strawberry Guava and Eucalyptus

September 19, 2011

Invasive Species!  Sounds like a sci-fi movie, but it’s what Patrick Dougherty and volunteers at the Hui No’Eau Visual Arts Center are building his sculpture with. Here are some pictures of the process as they bend and shape the strawberry guava saplings and eucalyptus sticks into what will become a “Where the Wild Things Are” type of structure. It will be complete this Friday, September 23rd. No matter what age you are, you’ll feel like a kid when you see it. The smell of eucalyptus leaves and the stick archways that lead you inside this life size, fairy tale structure makes my imagination float to the 6 year old me; who climbed trees, rolled in the grass and talked to the flowers and bees.
